Squares and rectangles. Forming a regular pattern. A grid. What chaos can be harnessed in such a tight structure? It is like chess; a movement of key characters with a lot of freedom but they have to stick to the grid. There are many arrangements but what ties them together? It seems mysterious the light, looking, being alert to any slight changes of natural phenomena around me. I started concentrating on the grid whilst I was Artist In Residence at Oriel Y Parc, in St David’s, winter 2015-16. I found more fluidity working in acrylics on the floor where I had more space. I found I could take my work to a deeper level and I could be free of narrative and ideas. I could just be and show it.
